Can I just talk for a moment about how fucking deep this is?
Someone here is going to say they’re talking about being lesbians, and to you I say, “GO TO YOUR CORNER AND WATCH MORE ANIME UNTIL YOU HAVE A BETTER GRASP OF HOW THIS WORKS.” There are three and a half (yes, count ‘em—Kunzite/Zoisite, Haruka/Michiru, Usagi/Seiya, and the passionately one-sided Fiore/Mamoru that ends in an implied kiss) same-sex couples in Sailor Moon and gay, bisexual, or queer characters beyond counting (a partial list would include Kunzite, Zoisite, Usagi, Mamoru [see the first movie], Fiore, Fisheye, Haruka, Michiru, you can argue for Makoto … ). Their relationships aren’t treated any differently than Usagi’s and Mamoru’s (Kunzite and Zoisite are actually the two best-developed of the Dark Kingdom characters, and the only two who have individual screentime devoted to just them), so that’s clearly not what this line is referring to.
So, then, what? And why does she say it with a smile?
Here’s your answer: both of them are aware of their past lives in a way the other Senshi aren’t, and therefore of the possibility of a third one. Haruka has done a lot of shit that Usagi, as our avatar of love and justice, disapproves of: She’s taunted a child trying to call out that child’s powers. She has killed and threatened to kill “as many as it takes” (I think that was actually a dub line, but seriously, in the dub she was fucking ruthless, it was incredible how harsh they made her) to complete her mission. She’s trained Usagi—but she’s done so by belittling and criticizing her, forcing her to look at her own weakest points.
She really is not a nice person.
She expects no better, and she’s okay with that, because it’s been her choice, all the way. How is that deep?
Because she’s seventeen years old. The dub implies she’s in college, but in the original, she’s in high school. She’s only a year, maybe two, older than Usagi. And she’s ready to die if it helps, with no regard for her own safety.
